A non-clinical employee took the BLS training and shared their experience with us. Read below!
I recently went through my renewal courses for PALS & ACLS/BLS. Having this experience at the front of my mind, with the hands-on skills during the classes and the scenarios that help to facilitate that critical thinking role, I was able to apply this knowledge to a real-world scenario outside of the hospital environment.
This last weekend was the State Wrestling Tournament hosted by ISU at the HOLT/ICCU Dome. During the Events Saturday, a fan in the stands had an event in which surrounding family and friends started yelling for a medic. As soon as I heard them yelling for help, knowing that the medics would take critical seconds to get to the patient from the field, I ran to assist. With all of the refreshers for hands on skills and the impact of the educators, I was able to assist in assessment & critical first care of the fan, pulse checks -applying the AED device and relaying information to the Medic Team once they arrived to the stands.
A great big thanks to the Educator- creating a safe teaching & learning environment that sticks and supports everyone in hospital or out, to provide confident appropriate critical care.
