The Beat - Week 5
Carrie Walker – Dr Brad Erickson
I’d like to nominate my coworker Carrie Walker. She is AMAZING! I haven’t ever worked with someone who was always cheering for every other player in the office like Carrie. She has an incredible work ethic. Carrie will go out of her way to make sure every employee in the office knows they are loved, celebrate successes and help others know they matter. With the giant leap with Cerner, Carrie has been swamped with meetings and all sorts of things, but she still takes time to be an efficient, participant in the office. Carrie also has a heart of gold. She works SO hard with the chronic care patients we have, she is an INCREDIBLE mother and I admire everything she does with so much grace. I would love to nominate my sweet friend for all the tenderness, courage, determination, motivation and ease she carries herself.
Carrie Walker – Dr Brad Erickson
Carrie is absolutely amazing with our patients. We have a patient whose significant other passed away many months ago and he had become depressed, unwilling to do most things. Carrie continued to call him monthly to check in on him. She found out that this patient had a class reunion coming up so she encouraged him to get dressed up and go in order to get out of the house and meet new people. The patient was unsure but in the end Carrie was able to get him to agree to attend. Carrie called him after the reunion to see how it went and the patient was so grateful for Carrie pushing him to go as he was able to meet new people and even got asked out on a date.
Amber Whitmill – TCI
I would like to nominate Amber Whitmill, an RN at Teton Cancer Institute. Amber is one of our incredibly skilled nurses here at TCI. Like other nurses at our clinic, she is consistently monitoring patients for necessary chemotherapy dose reductions and infusion reactions. Her instincts, skill level, personality and positivity make her an amazing individual for both her patients and for our pharmacy team to work with. In addition to excelling at her normal job duties, she also takes on additional roles for our entire institution, such as training new oncology nurses for IFCH. And, she does all of this with a positive attitude.
I have always had high regards for Amber, but this last week I was personally touched by her expertise and dedication. I am currently 8 months pregnant, and was talking to Amber and another RN when they came into our med room about my swollen pregnant legs. Amber looked at the difference between the swelling in my legs and immediately thought that I had a blood clot. She insisted that I go to the hospital for an ultrasound. I sort of brushed her off and continued to work but she continued to persist. She recruited our clinic’s scheduler who called and made me an appointment, and then after I told the scheduler I was ok to go during a day off the following week, she further recruited one of our Hematologists who also persisted that I go in STAT. Within hours of Amber noticing my legs, I was diagnosed with not one but two blood clots and was immediately started on treatment. I know with 100% certainty that I wouldn’t have gotten treatment as rapidly had she not been as persistent as she was. Her instincts in this case, as with many other rapid response situations that I’ve witnessed her in, were spot on.
And I am so appreciative that she went above and beyond.
SHOUT-OUTS
Charyn Brooks – PeriOp
I would like to nominate Charyn Brooks for the Commitment to Excellence Award. Charyn is responsible for the charges for all of the Perioperative area. With the Cerner startup we encountered an overwhelming number of issues and Charyn has patiently been working through those to get charges completed. She works all hours and days to try to complete the charges monthly. She is meticulous in making sure everything is accounted for. She is irreplaceable.
PeriOp Staff
I would like to nominate the entire Perioperative staff for their work on Friday, December 20th. We did 80 Surgeries that day and everyone came in when asked and worked with Professionalism and good humor. That sets a new one day record at MVH and we had no patient complaints. What a great crew!!
Amanda Moore – Point of Care
I have a nomination I would like to put in for Amanda Moore, She has really been our savior through our Cerner transition and really don’t think we could have made it as far as we have without her. As I am sure you are aware going live was very hectic and being in a clinic setting has had its many challenges and continues too as well. She has been there for us daily taking each issues, problem, concern ect. Her helping us to get the resolutions and work flows we need to continue working through each disaster has really helped us more than words could even describe. I think she has gone above and beyond not only for me and my staff but for all clinics as we do group meetings twice a day. I know she works on all my issues and others day and night, to help us get every problem we have resolved in a timely fashion.
Rick Goldman – Wellness and Recovery
I would like to nominate Rick Goldman for the Commitment to Excellence Award. He is an LCSW at Teton Cancer Institute here in Idaho Falls and ever since I have met Rick, he has always gone above and beyond. He volunteers his time to not only helping his patients, but his community as well. He has volunteered for the Relay for Life, Brake for the Cure, is a big advocate for the Shannon Wilker Foundation, and even recently participated in Adopt-A-Family shopping (just to name a few). He continues to improve his knowledge and skills by actively participating in various workshops including ASIST (suicide prevention training), and ACT Therapy. He assists other social workers in Mountain View to help them advance in their careers and knowledge so they can better help the Mountain View Hospital community. Rick offers so much of his energy to others. He is such a beacon in his own life, Mountain View and his community.
Sofia Ybarra –Admissions
I would like to instead nominate Sofia Ybarra for the award! She is always making a positive working environment for all of her co-workers she works with and provides excellent care to the patients she admits in! She is one of a kind employee! She also goes over and aboard to strive for excellence for herself and for others that influence her daily! She, I would say deserves the nomination out of all the employees that I know of!
Nicole Jacobsen – Quality Resources
I’d like to nominate Nicole Jacobsen. She goes above and beyond to ensure the providers are taken care of. Her hard work does not go unnoticed!
Trenna Hillyard – PeriOp
I am submitting Trenna Hillyard for the Commitment to Excellence Award for 4th Quarter 2019 because of her willingness to pursue a resolution for our Cerner charting debacle. Having come to work in PACU during 4th quarter, to help us out, she quickly could see that the new charting system was more than a minor problem. She took the initiative to look into finding answers to make the charting system more user friendly in PACU.
Vince Melanese – PeriOp
Vince always goes up and beyond his job description to make the nurses work flow more smoothly and efficiently. He makes himself available whenever someone needs help with a patient, transport, or any other task that is asked of him. He often stays late to make sure the nurses have enough help. He is amazing!
Sara Felgenhauer – PACU
I would like to submit Sara Felgenhauer, RN PACU for the Commitment to Excellence Award.
During this 4th quarter tension has been high, tempers have flared and interdepartmental relations have been strained but, Sara stays kind, considerate and compassionate.
Sara works part time typically but, in the last few months, she has come in extra, stayed late and been a continuing positive influence in our PACU department.
She works 24-30 hours/week but, during this very hectic time, she has clocked 50+ hours per week. She has been instrumental in training our traveler nurses on the new Cerner system.
I have multiple notes from Travelers and staff members recommending Sara for a raise or a bonus or some recognition for all that she has done to keep spirits high, increase knowledge and skill in the new computer system, take call for very tired co-workers and has kept a smile on her face the whole time.
She deserves much recognition and praise for going above and beyond her regular responsibilities to keep the department running smoothly and people working well together.
Logan Black – Eastern ID Spine Center
I would like to nominate Logan Black. I believe Logan is the role model manager. I wish all of our managers were as responsible, educated and communicative with their positions with the company. He is always willing to help and has a smile on his face.
Evelyn Rossi – Health Information Management
I nominate Evelyn Rossi. I think she deserves this award because she is a great leader, and she is willing to jump in and help her team, or the hospital anyway she can. She is always willing to step up to the plate to help everyone in her department as well as other departments. She is very compassionate about her work. She gives a 110% every day, and sets a great example to her staff of what great work ethic is.
Hannah Talamantez - Laboratory
I would like to nominate Hannah Talamantez for the Commitment to Excellence Award. She is constantly going above and beyond for her team. She recently graduated and advanced from the phlebotomy supervisor to a lab technician, and has constantly been doing to her best to ensure the transition is smooth for the new manager and the entire team. We are always impressed with her hard work and how much she cares about this hospital.
Heather McVey - Administration
Heather McVey is the most amazing manager I have ever had. Heather works herself so hard. She refuses to anyone no when they come to her for help. I don't know how she keeps up. She also has a gentleness to her. She can address any bad situation with grace and make everything ok. Heather deserves a big vacation for her efforts. She truly puts Mountain View hospital before herself and most of the time before her family. Here a big hoorah!!!! for Heather
Shelley Jackman – Quality Resources
I nominate Shellie Jackman to be honored with the "commitment to excellence award". Shellie is always going over and above to provide a good healthy working place for her employees! She is dedicated to her job and providing excellent care to her employees and making sure that they are well taken care of!
Jen Smith - Administration
I want to nominate Jen Smith for the commitment to excellence award. She is the person I look to for answers to all of my questions, how to interact with customers, co-workers and vendors, and to talk to about anything, really. She treats the employees under her care with respect and as equal partners in the work they do. She supports them in their work and always shows that she is happy to see them-And she is genuinely happy to see all of them. Jen is committed to providing the best service and product that she can in every area of her job. Higher Grounds is her baby and she is excited about everything they offer, the couriers do a great job and the parking attendants are happy to help out in every way they can. I really couldn’t ask for a better co-worker and role model.
Jen Smith - Administration
Hey, I wanted to nominate my boss, Jennifer Smith, Supervisor of Guest Services, because she's been doing an amazing job and I want her to be recognized for it.
Travis Vance – Information Systems
I would like to nominate Travis Vance for not only managing the IT team through go live but putting in an average of 70 hours a week to make sure things in place that, frequently, no one else even thought about until it was too late. His dedication, forethought, and management during that incredibly stressful time was nothing short of amazing.
Kayleen Skinner – Quality Resources
I would like to nominate Case Management/Utilization Review Supervisor, Kayleen Skinner, for the Commitment to Excellence Award, 4th Quarter 2019. Kayleen is extremely dedicated to her work and accomplishing the missions and goals of Mountain View Hospital and Idaho
Falls Community Hospital. Some of her accomplishments in the 4th Quarter have been:
Getting the Case Management/Utilization Review Team up and running to support Idaho Falls Community Hospital in addition to continuing to meet the needs of a very busy surgical unit on the Mountain View Side.
She has worked tirelessly with the Cerner Team and hospital staff to train troubleshoot and solve many frustrating technical problems in implementing Cerner and new processes. She meets with committees and teams throughout the hospital to update educate and improve functioning in the UR, Case Management, and Patient Financial and Quality Improvement arena. This has included working many long days, weekends and holidays – even if she is not feeling well.
She continues to keep a patient-centered focus and a focus on meeting provider needs. If there is a need for coverage on the weekend she is there. She carries the phone 24/7 and is there for her team members (E.R., hospital floor, Social Work and Discharge Planning) at all times.
She is cheerful and upbeat, and never too busy for a team member’s questions or concerns.
She is endlessly patient, having searched for, hired and trained new employees in our department and patiently and kindly answers questions while keeping a good attitude and forward-looking focus in the midst of the transition to Cerner and the expansion of our roles in meeting the needs of the new hospital.
She has the best interests of Mountain View and Idaho Falls Community Hospital in mind at all times and serves as a great team member, mentor and leader for all employees of both hospitals.
Debra Fuelling – Radiation Oncology
Debra Fuelling, our supervisor at Teton Cancer Institute Radiation Oncology exemplifies many aspects of who a true leader ought to be, but in the last little while I have been very impressed with all she has done for our center. She certainly has many administrative responsibilities and wonderful meetings as part of her position, but she also never hesitates to drop everything to cover for any employee's absence, sometimes unexpectedly, and understands and fulfills those roles incredibly well. With all the sicknesses floating around, she's gone above and beyond multiple times not even thinking twice about taking care of whatever needs have arisen. I'm amazed at how Deb is able to stay on top of managing and balancing the daily busyness that takes place under her jurisdiction and would definitely say she exemplifies a tremendous commitment to excellence in all facets every day!

News From The Volunteers
Volunteers have been dedicated to the well-being of patients since Mountain View opened its doors in 2002. They are a welcoming presence for visitors and employees alike. They make our jobs easier and keep our patients happy. With the addition of IFCH, we are in need of even more volunteers.
We have several positions we need to fill at the entry to the hospital- especially greeting visitors at the information desks and in admissions. We accept help from anyone 14 and older. Volunteering can be a great way for students to fulfill the hours necessary for their senior projects and to help decide if working in a hospital setting is right for them. There are opportunities in imaging, ED, patient floors, and waiting rooms.
Please let your family and friends know about the opportunity to volunteer at the hospitals! They can reach our volunteer coordinator, Rachel at rcope@mvhospital.net or call or text 208-520-8397. Applications are available online and at both information desks.
Our first blood drive at Idaho Falls Community Hospital was a HUGE success! Our goal was completely blown out of the water and you showed up in numbers that other hospitals in the area only attempt to reach. I’m absolutely blown away by how quickly you showed up and filled appointments- TWICE! Thank you to everyone who made it in to donate and to everyone who was on the on-call list. I hope that we can continue to exceed our goals and save more lives with each drive!
